Wal-Mart Mexico to Open 1,500 New Stores

The Bentonville retail giant, through its Wal-Mart Mexico y Centro America subsidiary, will be opening 1,500 more stores in Mexico and Central America by 2030, thus adding to the more than 4,000 retail points it already operates in the region.

The investment, valued at USD 2.05 billion, is 20% higher what Wal-Mart invested in the region last year, and is expected to add more than 15 million square feet of total sales floor space in Mexico and Central America. 30% of the funds have been allocated to opening new stores, and 41% to renovating and maintaining existing stores, as well as growing omnichannel operations. Interestingly, only 11% of the investment will be spent on enhancing the shopping experience across digital platforms, store automation, and analytics.

Mexico is currently Wal-Mart’s largest market in the region with over 3,100 stores in the country
