Fashion’s Biggest Polluter
The ultra-fast fashion retailer’s carbon footprint has almost tripled since 2021, and outpaced other fast-fashion retailers like Inditex, and doubled the emissions of Nike, H&M, and LVMH. Whilst it’s difficult to compare the impact each retailer has on the environment, it is estimated that, in 2023, Shein’s carbon footprint reached 16.7 million tonnes, growing even faster than their sales. Their staggering sales growth is in fact curbing Shein’s own sustainability initiatives, whether it’s reducing target emissions by 25% by working with SBTI, or launching a circularity fund.
