Pinterest 2024 Trends Report
In 2023, over 480 million people did billions of searches through Pinterest, making the social network a powerful tool for trendspotting. For the last four years in a row, Pinterest has accurately predicted 80% of the trends that ultimately do take place in the year, so it's a valuable tool for advertisers and brands alike.
This year's report highlights 23 key trends for 2024 in fashion, beauty, home décor, traveling, parenting, and so much more:
Eclectic Grandpa: Think of it as a twist on the classics, anchored on retro fashion, and featuring unexpected color combinations. Personally, I believe that this trend was inspired by pioneer Instagram accounts like Advanced Style and Ladies of Madison Avenue. Both accounts challenge the view of Fashion being something only young people could enjoy and celebrate a more curated and unique personal style that can only be developed after many decades of playing with fashion.
Be Jelly: Pinterest predicts jellyfishes to be the inspiration for 2024. According to Pinterest, "Gen Z and Millennials are driving this trend, searching for “jellyfish lamp,” “jellyfish hat” and even “jellyfish haircut.”"
Kitschy Kitchens: Next year, Gen X and Boomers will rethink their kitchen designs and cooking areas by incorporating thrifted finds, vintage appliances, and eye-popping colors like retro pink, or any other pastel color Delonghi and Smeg are well known for. Traditional farmhouse kitchens are officially out!
Cafécore: People are so addicted to their caffeine, that they are now looking to make their homes feel more like their favorite coffee shop. Terms such as “cafe chalkboard” and “coffee station décor,” were heavily searched in Pinterest all of last year..
Bigger is Better: Pinterest predicts that bigger will be better when it comes to beauty next year, and states that Millennial and Gen Z shoppers "will favor oversized opulence, shopping for styles that match their fluffy hair aesthetic."
Blue Beauty: 2024 will be a trip down memory lane with "blue glam makeup" and "pastel blue eyeshadow" making a comeback. Pinterest calls it a "60s staple", I call it 10th grade.
Bows Everywhere: No surprise here, bows will still be everywhere in 2024, with Millennials and Gen Z shoppers adding bows to every little thing they wear. In the lead-up to 2024, searches were rising for “bow outfit,” “bow necklace,” “heels with bows” and more.
Racket Sports: Seems like the pickleball craze is our and badminton is in for 2024. According to Pinterest, searches for “badminton outfit”, “playing badminton”, and even “badminton trash talk” are on the rise.
Groovy Nuptials: 70s-inspired weddings will make their comeback, with disco décor and bohemian bachelorettes. Lambeth cakes and kitschy creations were after all one of the standout items of 2023.
Making the Most: The circular economy is coming in force next year. Consumers’ engagement with the social network strongly suggests a move toward repurposing fabric for one-of-a-kind clothing, and " a rising awareness around food sustainability, when ubiquitous “discard recipes” will make leftovers sexy." Personally, however, I think that consumers are searching for ideas on how to preparer feels off of leftover to fight inflationary pressure and economic instability.
Melty Mashups: Frankenstein foods that mesh comfort foods into some new monstrosity, such as “burger quesadillas” and “pizza pot pies.”
Tropical flavors: Pinterest bets on tropical-themed drinks, home décor, and fashion for 2024. Searches for terms like “pineapple mocktails” and “coconut aesthetic” strongly suggest the Tropics will be one of the trends for next year.
Head to Glow: Move over (facial) skincare, Boomers and Millennials are now shifting focus to their body, by spending more on in-home spa experiences, high-end body products, and quality SPF. Towards the end of 2023, searches for “body skin care routine” were up by 1,025%.
Slowing Down: According to Pinterest's report, "slowcations are the new vacations" amongst Gen Z and Millennials, with consumers opting for laid-back breaks, and a slow-living kind of lifestyle, which is shocking to no one considering the "little life" trend that has taken over TikTok in the last few weeks.
Seeking Connection: "People are going online to find ways to forge deeper offline connections", which seems paradoxical in itself. “Emotional intimacy,” as well as “questions for couples to reconnect” and “deep questions to ask friends” are popular search terms, and it seems that people are turning to Pinterest for new conversation starters. This, of course, makes me wonder if somewhere along the way we took a wrong left and we've lost not just our creativity, imagination, and the art of conversation, but also how to talk to other people in real life. Are we so chronically online and devoid of empathy that we have forgotten how to build emotional intimacy?
Inchstones: Parents are now more obsessed with their babies than ever before, searching on the platform how to celebrate their baby's miniscule triumphs, whether it's by searching for “monthly milestone ideas,” “potty training rewards ideas” or “my first tooth party.” I wonder if the growth of such celebrations is more influenced by the desire to post about these triumphs of social media, than the emotional and physical development of their babies. Food for thought!
Western Gothic: "A mix of vintage Americana chic with a deep, moody hue is on the horizon as searches are trending up for “western bedding ideas,” ”country room ideas,” “western gothic” and more."
Jazz Revival: Millennials and Gen Z are driving the rise of popularity for jazz-inspired outfits, and lo-fi looks.
Aquatecture: Over-the-top aquariums are terrariums are set to be the next big thing with which Gen Xers and Millennials aim to replace their non-existent kids, especially after killing most of the plants they took home over the last few years. Pinterest forecasts “small aquarium designs” and over-the-top “turtle terrariums.” to trend in 2024.
Punching and Kicking: Yoga, peace, and mindfulness is out, kicking the crap out of life is in. Millennials and Gen Z will go all-in on combat sports like karate, kickboxing and jiu jitsu. Searches for “shadow boxing workouts,” “jiu jitsu” and “karate kumite” are on the rise.
Cute Financials: “Credit card stickers,” “teddy bank” or “aesthetic piggy bank” are trending, which seriously makes me fear for humanity. In 2024, Gen Z and Millennials will take whatever little money they have, which is not much, and try to make it as cute as possible.
Free Spirits: Next year, boomers and Gen X will fiddle with “Off road camping,” “off road car,” “off road wheels”, or at least pretend they will.
Metallics: Cool silver tones and bold chrome will continue to grow in 2024, a trend mostly driven by Gen Z and Millennials. Common searches include “aluminum furniture,” “nail art metallic” and “aluminum door design.”
